While maintaining a wide range of skills he focuses foremost in acrylic painting and mixed mediums on canvas. Accompanied by carpentry and interactive installations, building is an integral part of his creative process. Post university he trained as an assistant for a professional studio artist and apprentice with a jeweler, later finding independence as a self employed artist and contractor. Carpenter by trade and painter by passion, one way or another, Bruce’s life constantly evolves around art and creation.
Artist Statement: What, How, and WHY
My art is an invitation to my world of healing and a gift to those who receive it. Creating my body of work over 17 years begins with a dot, a line, and a scribble. Which continues growing in to a fantastic landscape of self reflection and relationship to the world around us. Most of my work is on stretched canvas that I usually build, but I’ll work with what I get. Early in my painting development canvas was scarce, so often I would paint over works to make way for something new. In this process I learned to let go of ideas I hold on to and pave a path for freedom in my expression. It taught me to listen to my art and be bold. This is how I allow myself to evolve with my art, not subjecting myself to the idea that a piece must be concrete in its original idea or form. Currently I’m working with a wide variety of collected resources and materials with the intent to expand from primarily canvas works and utilize the materials to eliminate waste from the creative process. The end goal is to establish a method and principle for others to use or be inspired from to do something similar with the mediums they use.
